Plans to evict us

Southwark gives 3 months notice before eviction though no alternative moorings exist.

An enforcement order has been served by Southwark council to remove the barges, which it says do not have planning permission for permanent mooring and are “visually detrimental”.

Southwark council’s notices order the deconstruction of the moorings and the removal of the tyre beds on the basis that:

· There has been a material change of use from commercial to residential / mixed use.
· The laying of tyres is an operational development on land.
· Planning permission is required for both / either of the above.

If enforced the notices will displace:
· more than 30 residential barges
· more than 60 adults
· several children

Because there are no moorings available in London for this number of boats, and with waiting lists of about 5 years, Southwark Council will in effect force everyone living on the moorings out of London, threatening their jobs, businesses and education, or make them homeless.

The Port of London Authority (PLA), having also been issued an enforcement notice by Southwark, affixed notices on each boat (pictured) stating that they would enforce a "Special Direction" ordering the removal of all boats and all parts of the mooring by the 23rd October. Any boats remaining would be towed away.

On the 28th September the PLA attached further notices to the boats notifying us that they are suspending their actions until our appeal has been heard.
